Decorating your home should be fun, and help you represent your personality and individuality. And while decorating mistakes occasionally happen, they can easily be rectified or avoided. Perhaps the number one decorating mistake would be not to have a plan at all, treating the design elements or furniture as an afterthought.
With that said, here are a few ways you can plan for decorating your home:
Choose the paint color last.
It may seem counterintuitive, but paint is easily changed, whereas your furnishings, wall hangings and decorative elements are not. Pick the color based on what you have in the room, not on how you want the room to look. The best-looking room will coordinate with your belongings.
Arrange the rugs
Arranging a rug doesn’t take a lot of skill, but having a rug that’s the wrong size or shape can make the room look thrown together rather than thought out. Follow one of these three rules: all on, all off, or front on. In this case, it means that all your furniture should follow whatever rule you set. Having half the furniture with front on and half off the rug will make the room feel off-kilter.
Create a focal point
Do you have a beautiful fireplace or intricate lighting in your room? Make it the focal point, with all other items supporting that focal point. Too many focal points and your eye doesn’t know where to land, creating a feeling of chaos and discomfort.
Be Bold
Don’t be afraid to have bold colors, fixtures or furnishings in your home. Above all your home should reflect your personality and comfort level. Don’t be afraid to make it your own.
