How to Search for a Dog-Friendly Apartment in Chicago

It used to be that finding a dog-friendly apartment in Chicago was a daunting task. Thankfully, with the advent of web real estate searches, there have been many advancements in this area. Websites from rent.com to Zillow have sections or filters that will only show you listings that allow pets.

When you do find an apartment that allows dogs, keep an eye out for special restrictions. Some condo buildings formally allow pets, but have weight restrictions at weights such as 12, 15, or 20 pounds.

If the apartment has hard flooring and you’ll have neighbors living under you, you might want to talk with them before you move in and see how much noise is created from your dog’s activity. This might save you some neighbor disputes later on. Obviously, buildings with concrete between each floor offer much better insulation from noises.

However, there are other aspects than just restrictions that many an apartment dog-friendly. Having a lawn, however small, will help with quick potty breaks when you don’t have time for a full walk. Certain newer condo buildings even have a doggy area on the roof for the same reason. Some of the newest, luxury buildings even have puppy playgrounds and dog-walking services available in-building!
